Last 21 February 2003, the WomensHub was formally welcomed to the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), one of the world's oldest networks of civil society organizations actively working together to promote information and communication technologies (ICTs) for social justice and development.
The APC is an international network of civil society organisations dedicated to empowering and supporting groups and individuals through the strategic use of ICTs, especially Internet-related technologies. APC and its members pioneer practical and relevant uses of ICTs for civil society, especially in developing countries. APC is an international facilitator of civil society's engagement with ICTs and related concerns, in both policy and practice.
WomensHub is the first Philippine-based organisation to seek and gain full membership to the thirteen-year-old network. Prior to this, members of the WomensHub have been connecting and collaborating with APC and APC members since 1995 in various initiatives like the APC Techie Meeting in 2000, the APC Internet Rights Campaign, the first APC Betinho Awards in 2000, and the APC Women's Networking Support Programme (APCWNSP). The WomensHub currently acts as secretariat of the APCWNSP in Asia and the Pacific. The APCWNSP, one of the most dynamic initiative of the APC, is a leading global network of women ICT practitioners which has undertaken many innovative campaigns and projects to support social change and gender justice through the use of ICTs.
Its formal membership in the APC is expected to further expand and consolidate the WomensHub's advocacy work in the international context of gender equality and women’s empowerment through the use of ICTs. WomensHub is represented in the APC Council by Pi Villanueva Reyes.
