Constricting Cyberspace

by WomensHub Web Team

WomensHub co-sponsored a forum entitled “Constricting Cyberspace: Examining Internet Rights after 9-11” held last September 24 at Balay Kalinaw in the University of the Philippines.

Karen Banks, coordinator of the European Internet Rights Initiative and the Women’s Networking Support Program of the Association for Progressive Communications (APC-WNSP), spoke on Internet rights and global trends in security after the September 11th attack on the United States. Dr. Emmanuel Lallana of the e-ASEAN Task Force talked about the ASEAN priorities with respect to the Internet and new information and communication technologies (ICTs). The Director of the Defense Information Management Office of the Department of National Defense, Ramon Martinez, presented the Philippine government perspective on Internet and Security issues. Pi Villanueva of WomensHub addressed the issue of Internet rights, security and privacy from the standpoint of a technology user and a martial law survivor.

The forum, co-sponsored by the Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) and the UP Third World Studies Center, was attended by representatives from various NGOs in Manila, media practitioners and students from the University.
